What is converter slag splash protection technology?

Converter slag splashing technology is a new technology developed in recent years to improve furnace life. It is based on the technology of adding MgO-containing slag forming agent to the slag to make sticky slag and slag and protect the furnace, which was widely used in the 1970s. The oxygen lance is used to inject high-pressure nitrogen gas and the steel will be tapped within 2-4 minutes. The residual slag remaining in the furnace is spray coated on the entire surface of the converter lining to form a furnace protection technology for the slag protective layer. This technology can greatly increase the life of the converter, with less investment, simple process and significant economic benefits. This technology was developed by Praxair Gas Company of the United States and applied in the Great Lakes branch of Republic Steel Company of the United States. After being implemented in the Great Lakes Plant and Granite City Plant, it has not been promoted. In 1991, the Indiana HaBOr plant of LTV, USA used slag splashing as part of the overall furnace protection. In September 1994, the lining life of the plant's 252t top-bottom combined blowing converter reached 15,658 furnaces, the gunning material consumption was reduced to 0.37kg/t steel, the gunning material cost was saved by 66%, and the converter operation rate increased from 78% in 1987 to 97% in 1994. Magnesia carbon brick is a new type of refractory developed in the early 1970s. It is made of high melting point alkaline oxide magnesium oxide (melting point 2800℃) and high melting point carbon materials that are difficult to be infiltrated by slag. Oxide additive, non-burning carbon composite refractory carbon-bonded alkaline brick combined with carbon binder. The main raw materials of magnesia-carbon bricks for converters are magnesia, flake graphite, binders and additives. As a composite refractory material, magnesia carbon bricks effectively utilize the strong slag corrosion resistance of magnesia and the high thermal conductivity and low expansion of carbon to compensate for the disadvantages of poor spalling resistance of magnesia.


Magnesia carbon bricks give full play to the advantages of alkaline materials and carbon materials. The main characteristics are:


1. Has good high temperature resistance.


2. Strong resistance to slag.


3. Good thermal shock resistance.


4. Low high temperature creep.


Magnesia carbon bricks are mainly used for lining of converters, AC electric arc furnaces, DC electric arc furnaces, and slag lines of ladle.
